As Sunbathers Ran From Violence, Popular Image Captures Lifeguard Dashing ‘Pedal to the Metal’ Towards the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong inhabitant of Bondi, views the renowned coast as her back yard. On a recent weekend evening, she, similar to other local residents, heard cracking sounds echoing across the suburb.

“That was the initial assumption, but I considered it was daylight and no one could see them,” Ching recounts. Stepping out of her residence, she observed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The faces on display told her trouble had occurred.

Positioned on the avenue, talking to a couple who had rushed up the hill soaked, she noticed someone moving up behind her. This turned out to be a rescuer, dashing towards Bondi barefoot from the adjacent Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while transporting a life-saving kit.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I only caught a glimpse of this blur of blue,” she recalls. “He was just flying past. He was the only one moving in the path that all the others was trying to flee, while holding that large equipment and barefoot … He moved at something that certainly every part of you would tell you to run in the reverse way.

“Without a second thought, but just totally pedal to the metal racing.”

A Powerful Moment of Bravery Amidst Chaos

The photo taken by Ching of the rescuer, since identified as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous instances of courage in the following of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, another lifeguard, explained that Doolan, called “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to assist the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to work with other rescuers, law enforcement and paramedics treating numerous the injured.

Waverley council, the governing body that hires many professional beach safety officers, said that the staff performed exceptionally from the moment the violence started through to late that evening.

“We have heard so many powerful stories, but the widely-circulated photo of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help assist the injured is extraordinary,” commented a mayor.

“The team show altruism every day in maintaining the safety of our world-famous shores safe for the public, but what we observed on that day should be highly praised.

“As we grieve and come to terms with the terror of this brutal and barbaric act of violence, I think it is important that we reflect on just how much positivity we have seen in the face of such evil.”
