The mood at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy on Saturday afternoon. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had allowed ten goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in a long-running conflict with chairman Claudio Lotito.
Had their campaign falling apart, or did there exist any cohesion keeping it intact in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, only for him admitted that the club had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were facing for financial irregularities. Speculation that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.
Lazio were just as chaotic during matches as off the field, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining initial five matches, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it has been hard to ascertain if they are improving or collapsing.
One individual kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio this season. He was on last season on loan at Parma and, during the summer break, his parent club were attempting to stay there temporarily. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster without replacements.
He joined originally during Sarri's previous tenure, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."
Perhaps the manager was persistently working to work out the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings while playing for Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
