Car Evading Police Crashes into Tampa Bar, Leaving Four Deceased and Eleven Injured

An speeding vehicle while evading police crashed into a crowded nightspot in the early hours on Saturday, killing 4 individuals and wounding 11 in a vintage district of Tampa, known for its entertainment scene and visitors.

Aerial surveillance team with the local police department observed the car driving dangerously on a highway at about just after midnight after police said the silver sedan had been observed street racing in a different neighborhood, according to a law enforcement announcement.

The Florida road police intercepted the vehicle and attempted to execute a maneuver that entails bumping a rear fender of a fleeing car to cause it to lose control, called a pit, but it was ineffective.

Highway patrol officers “ended pursuit” as the car sped toward the historic downtown area near the city center, local police reported. Eventually, the motorist lost control of the car and struck more than a dozen people near the establishment, police confirmed.

Three individuals perished at the location and a fourth person succumbed at a hospital. By Saturday morning, a fifth victim was hospitalized in critical state, and eight additional victims were being treated at local hospitals but were classified as not critical, authorities stated. Two other individuals experienced minor harm and declined medical aid at the scene. All 15 people are adults.

“What happened today was a senseless tragedy, we are with the loved ones of the victims and everyone who were affected,” the local top law enforcement officer expressed in a message.

Officers named the alleged driver as 22-year-old the individual, who was arrested on Saturday and is being held at the Hillsborough county jail.

Court records showed Sampson has been charged with four charges of reckless driving causing death and 4 charges of aggravated fleeing or eluding with serious bodily injury or fatality. Each are serious crimes. No attorney was listed for the accused.

“The community is mourning the tragedy,” remarked Tampa’s leader, who also was the city’s first female top cop, in a post on social media.
“Our condolences are with the victims and families. Official inquiries into this crash is continuing, and we are working to obtain explanations,” the statement added.

In recent years, some states and municipal authorities have pushed to restrict the employment of rapid car chases to safeguard both the public and officers. Following a increase in deaths, a recent study funded by the federal authorities called for police chases to be rarely used, explaining that the risk to suspects, officers and bystanders often exceeds the immediate requirement to take someone into custody.

Still, the state has intensified efforts on the methods, with the state’s highway patrol revising its policies to relax restrictions on the use of vehicle pursuits and pit maneuvers. The federally supported report described those tactics as “high-risk” and “controversial”.
