England to Start the European Championship 2028 Quest at the Etihad Stadium

The English squad will initiate their UEFA Euro 2028 adventure at the Etihad Stadium, on the condition that they secure the expected entry for a championship taking place in the bulk of Britain and the Irish Republic.

The Etihad Stadium has not welcomed an English men’s game since the spring of 2016, when the visitors were beaten 2-1 in a friendly, but is expected to stage the England side for their inaugural game on Saturday 10 June 2028.

England are scheduled to play their last two group stage games at the national stadium, but, if they top their group, their knockout stage opener would occur at the Newcastle stadium. Placing second would mean beginning the playoffs at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Championship Kickoff and Protest

The tournament was launched at an ceremony in central London on the previous evening. High-ranking officials from the tournament organizers and the organizing bodies were confronted as they entered the site by around fifty protesters, who urged Israel to be expelled from international football because of the Gaza crisis.

Banners were displayed with phrases reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters chanted: “Kick Israel out.”

Championship Fixture List

The inaugural fixture of the European Championship will be played at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, on a Friday in June 2028, a match that will feature the Welsh team if they secure a place.

The national stadium will host the penultimate rounds and the title decider, which will be played on Sunday 9 July with a commencement at 5:00 PM.

It is expected that an earlier kick-off, which will also be adopted for Champions League finals from the following campaign, will attract family audiences and help connect with a wider spectrum of viewers.

Host Nations

The Republic of Ireland are scheduled to play their opening match at the Aviva Stadium and Scotland would follow suit at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.

The national sides of all four hosts will participate in the qualifying tournament; two guaranteed slots will be reserved for any that do not reach the finals through the standard process.

Locations and Playoffs

Aston Villa’s stadium and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium complete the nine tournament locations. Every stadium will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the last eight held at every host’s main arena.

The qualifying draw will be held in Belfast, which was removed as a venue city last year when it was revealed the Belfast stadium could not be upgraded in time, on a date in late 2026.

Leadership Comment

“The event will be a tournament for the supporters and a celebration of everything we cherish about the football – its emotion and capacity to bring people together.”

More than three million admissions, a unprecedented number for a UEFA European Championship, are anticipated to be offered to attendees.
