Our team is checking images and video shared earlier today that purport to show the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials say fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he later died of his wounds. A probe is under way.
Our starting point to check the location from which the images originated relied on posts saying the blast happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building captured in the footage.
Identifying other buildings, streetlights and the street layout confirmed where the footage were taken.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
