Folly and Monarchical Hubris Sunk Andrew, and It Might Persist Yet

It all began with a single photograph, perhaps the most consequential ever taken of a member of the monarchy.

In the frame appeared the Earl of Inverness, with his arm around a teenage girl, while a companion smiled knowingly in the backdrop.

Lacking that snapshot, taken at a social event in 2001, who would have believed the claims of a teenager who declared she was trafficked across the Atlantic and compelled to have perfunctory relations with a individual of the monarchy?

A strange, revealing move by someone who had openly stated to have never heard of her, asserted he could never have had intimate contact with her, and yet handed over a substantial sum of family money to avert a long-delayed legal case.

Over a Decade of Scandal

In this context, conversations of the monarchy acting decisively to cut Andrew off are inaccurate. This scandal has endured for the largest portion of 15 years since that picture, and another image of Andrew walking amiably with a notorious individual surfaced.

  • Hubris: How long did his brothers and sisters, possibly even his relatives, realize that Andrew was so self-entitled?
  • Dubious Friendships: They must have realized, if his staff and the law enforcement were fulfilling their roles, that he had some extremely unsavory companions given he publicly invited them to estates.
  • Financial Extravagance: If the monarchy did not know about his personal conduct, they certainly knew about his wastefulness with public money.

Travel were listed in official documents: private aircraft travel from the palace to a golf course and back again in time for midday meal, private flights instead of scheduled services, all for the convenience of "Airmiles Andy".

Existence of Entitlement

Then there was the entitlement which expected deference when he appeared in a area or the extreme obsession about his honorifics used on his correspondence in letters to his associates.

He could get away with it while his parent, who strangely pampered him, was still living. The monarch did at least strip him of royal responsibilities and military positions in the aftermath of his catastrophic and, as revealed, untruthful public statement six years ago.

Current Situation

Merely in the last fortnight that events progressed rapidly, following the release of accounts giving more grim details of his actions and that of his connections.

Additional revelations have again highlighted Andrew's assumption that he could escape deceiving about his interaction with a disgraced individual.

Society (and the press) were far ahead of the royals. There was no one of any significance to support him, a result of all those years of presumption.

Monarchical Concerns

The wiser royals realized that. The one imperative is to pass on the monarchy, if not as previously at least intact and unblemished.

Over time the last 190 years trying to overcome the reputation of earlier rulers, showing they are valuable, accountable and responsive to their people.

He was placing all that in peril in an era when deference and privacy is no longer enough.

Aftermath

Ultimately, the famously uncertain monarch was prodded additional. There was no alternative. The institution had surrendered command of the account.

Now it is the removal of honorifics and the ongoing and lifetime social disgrace that will afflict Andrew the most.

  • Downgrading: Demoted to just a commoner
  • Historical Precedent: The initial royal to surrender his titles in recent history
  • Naval Career: Notably hurtful given his role in the engagement

He continues to be a constitutional officer, theoretically able to substitute for the monarch, and he is still in the lineage to the monarchy, but none of these will actually happen.

Future Prospects

Do individuals he comes across still defer to him? Could they still forget themselves and call him Sir? Will they even say Mr,

Certainly, he is not withdrawing to an ordinary town, but to the monarchy's large grounds at Sandringham.

In that place, he will be supplied by the king with one of the estate properties and given some type of financial support.

This is not his prior accommodation, where he paid a nominal rent for more than 20 years, and Norfolk is a bit remote, but even so it may not be sufficiently removed.

Outstanding Concerns

The situation continues. There are still files in the possession of overseas authorities to be made public.

  • Political Pressure: Could lawmakers demand more
  • Monetary Probe: Or investigate the waste of taxpayer funds
  • Judicial Potential: There may even be a police investigation into his conduct

Possibly for the present the reputational impact to the institution is restricted. The statement from the institution was evidently that the removal of honorifics was what the king, and especially other senior royals, sought.

Altered Approach

An end to deception that Andrew was making the choice himself. And, notably, the short communication showed plainly that the institution were siding with the accuser's account of occurrences.

Additionally, for the premiere occasion they ultimately showed regard for the affected individuals: "These actions are judged required, despite the fact that he persists in refuting the claims against him."

Ultimately it is entitlement, selfishness and laziness that will undermine the institution. In his stupidity, self-gratification and corruption, Andrew gives the impression never to have learned that lesson.
