The 2026 cars are designed to be more compact, agile and eco-conscious than this year.

The world of Formula 1 has introduced the official terminology that will be used to describe the technical complexities of its new 2026 technical rules.

The championship is embarking on what is considered the most significant rules overhaul in its competitive history next season, featuring new chassis and engine rules and the compulsory introduction of 100% sustainable fuels.

The new power units, which maintain the 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrid, boast a significantly increased electrical capacity, driving major innovations in the aero packages.

During grand prix events, competitors will tactically deploy battery power – potentially on qualifying laps – to secure the peak lap time.

Broad surveys were carried out with a diverse audience, including long-time followers and newcomers, to identify which phrases would make things clearer of the main elements of the new regulations.

The key objective was to render a series of complex technical aspects of the racing as easy to grasp as possible for the broadest viewership.

Consequently, older technical labels for certain devices – such as "x-mode and z-mode" for the moveable wings – have been abandoned in preference for straightforward terms that directly explain the actual function of the innovation.

Key Technical Innovations

According to rule-makers that racers will have greater control to choose strategies regarding power usage, harvesting, and efficiency.

The new regulations mandate a range of settings that will be clearly indicated on television graphics to improve the audience's understanding of the race battle.

  • Passing Mode: This supersedes the present overtaking aid. It provides a short boost of battery power accessible when a driver is less than a second the vehicle in front to assist with an overtake.
  • Extra Push Mode: This is a on-demand power boost from the hybrid system that can be deployed for offensive or defensive moves. It grants the driver peak output at the click of a switch.

Both of these crucial modes will have to be managed carefully, as the available electrical charge is capped.

  • Adjustable Aero: Both the nose and rear wings change configuration – flattening on the long straight sections for minimal air resistance and higher speed, and closing in the corners for optimal cornering performance.
  • Energy Harvesting: The system can recharge the energy store with regenerative braking, or during throttle lift at the conclusion of a straight or in corners where only limited engine output is required.

What's Changing on the Cars?

The vehicles for the new era will be smaller and lighter relative to current models, with a wheelbase shortened by 200mm to 3,400mm, width narrowed by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the car weight decreased by 30kg.

Total aerodynamic grip is expected to drop by approximately a significant margin, although constructors will inevitably claw this back as they optimize their packages.

Aerodynamic drag has been slashed by 40%. The cars will feature active aerodynamics – front and rear wings will adjust on the straight sections to improve speed and increase straightline speed and revert into place for peak handling.

Tyres will retain the current rim size, but the actual tyres will be narrower, by a quarter-centimetre on the front and 30 millimetres on the rear axle.

2026 Engine Regulations

The revised hybrid units will have an roughly half-and-half distribution in energy output by the internal combustion engine and the battery and motor, up from about 20% battery contribution under present rules.

The hybrid system is simplified through the deletion of the Motor Generator Unit – Heat, the sophisticated and pricey unit that generated electricity from the turbo.

Cars will be obliged to compete on 100% sustainable fuel, manufactured from plant-based materials or lab-created processes.
