Teacher Killed and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Firefight at School in Nigeria

Armed conflict at learning center
Educational institutions in Nigeria's northern region have often been targeted for weapon-wielding factions

Armed assailants have fatally shot an educator and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an raid targeting a educational institution for young women in the northwestern part of Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.

The armed faction invaded the comprehensive secondary school for girls in Kebbi State's Maga area at roughly 4 in the morning local time on the beginning of the work week, authorities reported.

The assailants "confronted officers on duty in a shootout" before scaling the perimeter fence and taking the pupils captive from their living quarters, an official report indicated.

One member of staff was killed while trying to protect the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now undergoing medical care.

Observers recounted a sizeable number of assailants, known locally as bandits, who arrived firing sporadically to generate terror.

Community members informed journalists that the attackers afterwards forced a number of girls into surrounding rural areas.

The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "extra specialized police forces, in coordination with armed forces and vigilante groups" to the area.

A systematic finding and recovery effort is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and potential getaway paths.

In recent years, educational institutions in Nigeria's north have regularly come under attack for militant organizations, who often carry out abductions to demand financial compensation or leverage deals with the government.

The incident in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge afflicting the area, resulting in households in Maga in a condition of terrified weariness as they expect and desire their young ones' unharmed reappearance.

Security crisis in northern Nigeria has escalated dramatically in the last several months, with schools bearing the brunt of the conflict.
