Israelis have come together around the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-initiated assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions proceeded in the neighboring country over a resolution to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The incident resulted in in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken back to Gaza as hostages. It was the most most lethal day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.
Israel answered by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its figures are seen as trustworthy by the United Nations and other global organizations.
"The aggressive enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Tuesday.
He also promised to "achieve all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will not pose a danger to Israel".
The Israeli government delayed official commemorations until mid-October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still were held around the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israelis killed in the Hamas assault was conducted in the coastal city. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was aired on Israeli broadcast stations.
Hours earlier, a silent tribute was observed across the country.
Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams gathered in the Egyptian coastal city of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of indirect talks to review the conditions of the proposal.
A senior delegate involved in the negotiations said that an night meeting of indirect talks commenced at evening in Egypt.
The official explained the earlier meeting concluded without significant progress, due to conflicting views over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not resume hostilities after the first phase of the agreement.
He noted that the negotiations are "difficult and have not yet deliver any real breakthrough," but noted that intermediaries are working hard to narrow the disparities between the conflicting groups.
In the city's Hostages Square previously, young Hagar - whose brother endured the incident on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were murdered and many more were captured by Hamas militants - told: "No place appears as home now and until each abducted person return none of us will have peace of mind."
"After we see all home again, we can relax again. Then we can start to recover," she continued.
Outside the leader's residence in Jerusalem, people gathered to express their support for the relatives of the abducted. Israel reports nearly fifty remain in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.
Demonstrator one woman explained: "We must do any agreement required for the captives to return. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be safe."
Research now consistently show that approximately 70% of the population prefer the war to conclude in exchange for the liberation of the abducted.
At the area of Nova festival, grieving people came together to honor the dead.
From the site, the sound of aerial bombardments and artillery could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people reported the heavy Israeli attacks persisted.
In the urban center, bombardments were noted in the dawn of that day in the western Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and zone neighbourhoods and in the eastern neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwestern area.
"Once the evening arrives, the fear arrives with it," displaced urban resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli bombing last year, described.
"Me and my three children are terrified of the bombings. All the night we are sleeping together, clinging, particularly my smallest child who puts his face on me all night."
"Every second we look at the updates to see developments. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be completed and that the war will resume to us."
The medical facility in the urban area said it had received the bodies of six people by the midday, including a trio who died in an Israeli attack in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of the city reported two more fatalities had been brought there. An individual was died by Israeli soldiers while looking for assistance to the south region, health workers reported.
