The Red Devils Poised to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich

Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Marquee Acquisition for United

Schüller, who has six months remaining on her contract, has been a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing will be seen as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League side.

Her exit from Munich has been anticipated after she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading strikers. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.

Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Forward Line

The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a major boost to United’s forward line. She has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.

  • Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Building Momentum at Old Trafford

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United seem to be building positive momentum.

Their recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the winter break has seen further business:

  1. The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.

Regarding the midfielder's extension, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”

The new defender, having joined from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
