What We Know Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Beach Shooting

At least 16 people perished and in excess of 40 were hurt when assailants shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police have called a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the death toll remains at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were admitted to hospital.

The victims are still awaiting officially identified, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Listed are the individuals who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the shooting, explaining they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed during the attack, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still under care, with several in critical condition. The injured comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
